It Is Our Fentons, Our Zip

While Fentons Creamery is part of Oakland's long ice cream heritage, it's time to claim the palace as our own: Fentons Creamery & Restaurant, 4226 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA 94611.

We are duly proud of the featured ice cream parlor in Pixar's Up, now in theaters. The recent newspaper coverage made me blush with pride. When I told non-Oaklanders, they thought I was a little over-enthusiastic - but that is their problem, right?

There is only one big downside, though. I drove down Piedmont this past Sunday, and could not believe the line pouring out the door. It was far beyond a normal, summer weekend, with people wrapped all around the building. It was the triple threat bewitching afternoon: normal Fenton's; Father's Day; and Up's release.

Of course, this is a happy problem and it helps counter the lost years when Fenton's was closed. Remember the fire, insurance and who know what other shenanigans?

Well, we don't really care - as long as Fentons survives and continues to dish out local, traditional ice cream sundaes that never go out of style...brown and tans forever.
